I came from far away, so I have rights to see all the
attractions that London has to offer.
Stay on Saturday afternoon at home is the same as a
bird trapped in a cage.
This time the chosen place was the Borough Market.
Similar to the Sao Paulo Municipal Market in Brazil (opened in
1933) and the Santiago Central Market in Chile (opened in 1872).
Two famous markets that I had the opportunity to know.
In fact, most cities around the world have a market that contain
typical food of the country, besides contain products from other countries as
well.
Like any old place has a lot of stories, I will talk a little
bit about their history and my experience to know the Borough Market.
London's traditional market , contains a wide variety of food
from fine Truffleds cheeses until Flapjacks ( it's common sweet here in
London).
By the thirteenth century near London Bridge which is on the
River Thames, many traders had the idea of selling their products near the
river.
Years later they moved to Borough Hight Street, now known as the
famous Borough Market.
It was closed in 1755 because of complaints from local
residents, who couldn't have peace because of the tumult and noise that traders
and people who frequented the market did.
Two years later it opened again, completing 250 years of
existence.
If at that time closed because of the turmoil, nowadays the
number of people multiplied. Madness is now!
Continuing my tour...
The market also has some stalls that sell products from other
countries like Croatia for example. In particular, the stall that I liked, it
reminds my family, my grandfather was born in Croatia.
Not only are the stalls that are from other places, but the
people who are there.
It is a very popular market, have many people around the world
who decide to know it on weekends, it's so crowded. There is no way to walk
without bumping into someone.
We must be careful, everyone is mesmerized by the fragrance of
food and drinks in this place. It is noticed a lot of people holding glasses of
craft beer, wine, champagne and coffee as well, besides they walk eating.
For those who go with the intention of making the weekly market
as if it were a normal market, you're wrong. Because it is a known market and
contain a variety of gourmet and differentiated products that are not sold
anywhere, therefore are expensive.
Of course has some exceptions such as fruits and vegetables
compared to some super markets are more affordable or with the same value, but
have more quality.
It is worth knowing, buy a gift for someone and go with empty
stomach to prove some samples or choose some stall to eat.
I had lunch but I tasted all kind of oil and exotic
cheeses.
The person has also option to go to restaurants, cafes and
patisseries that wrap around the market.
During my tour I found on the side of the market a cool place
known as Bakery School. For those who want to learn how to make bread and call
friends to live this experience, this place has workshops that teach how to do
different kind of breads.
Since we are on Christmas Eve students were doing a special
bread for the day.
We can see from the outside people with hands-on,
the door had a sign directing what is done in the day.
I loved it!
For those who have opportunity to know I advise to come on an
empty stomach and go early because it is a very popular place.
Have fun with this gastronomic tour!
